Amir Khan wins with second-round victory over Oisin Fagan View all news
LONDON - Amir Khan overwhelmed Oisin Fagan in two rounds to capture the WBA international lightweight title on Saturday and suggest that his first-round loss in his previous fight was a minor setback. Knocked out in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott of Colombia in September, the big-hitting Khan put U.S.-based Irishman Fagan down twice in the opening round with big right hands at London’s ExCel Arena. He knocked down Fagan again with another fast combination in the second and referee Mickey Vann stopped the fight at one minute, 37 seconds of the round. The victory was Khan’s 19th in 20 contests and the title means the 21-year-old was in sight of a genuine world title contest. This was Fagan’s sixth loss against 22 victories. “I knew where I went wrong against Breidis Prescott,” Khan said. “Fagan is a fighter who doesn’t go down. Look at his record, I don’t think anyone has done that to him. “My team told me to pace myself, not to go for the knockout, that it would come itself. That’s what I did. I was a bit more nervous than normal but I was relaxed and chilled out. I know how good I am and I’m not going to make the same mistakes again.” Enzo Maccarinelli knocked Matthew Ellis down twice in the opening round before stopping him midway through the second in a heavyweight contest which was arranged because his cruiserweight world title contest was called off. Maccarinelli switched to the heavyweight non-title contest after his hopes of regaining the WBO cruiserweight title he lost to David Haye in March were dashed. Replacement opponent Francisco Alvarez of Puerto Rico failed to make the weight and a medical test. Alvarez replaced Johnathon Banks, who pulled out with an ankle injury, and promoter Frank Warren said he hopes to line up Maccarinelli-Banks for the world title in February. Audley Harrison’s latest attempt to revive his career flopped when the 2000 Olympic super-heavyweight gold medallist lost an eight-round decision to part-time taxi driver Martin Rogan.
